eBikes

The City of Durango allows eBikes on the Animas River Trail, Goeglein Gulch Trail and other sidewalks and roadways. These pedal-assist bikes are not allowed on City of Durango open space.

The BLM currently does not allow eBikes. The USFS will open a Category 1 non-motorized trail in the Hermosa Special Management area which will link to the Hermosa Creek Trail (motorized) and Purgatory Trail System (which allows eBikes). All motorized USFS routes allow eBikes.

eBikes are pedal assist bikes that come in three categories:

  • CLASS 1: Bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the e-bike reaches 20mph.
  • CLASS 2: Bicycle is equipped with a throttle-actuated motor, that ceases to provide assistance when the e-bike reaches 20mph.
  • CLASS 3: Bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the e-bike reaches 28mph.
